Many years ago I got to see my first true Remote Control Helicopter fly up close and personal. The owner/builder/pilot spent countless hours preparing for this moment. He had built it from plans, added in the latest technology, electronics and engine. A gorgeous Bell Jet Ranger that filled the back of his station wagon.
Being his first flight, the final on site assembly and preflight preparation took longer than the actual flight. But it was still awesome to witness. He hovered around the R/C Club airstrip then flew a few quick passes back and forth in front of the gathered crowd. After a nice landing he shut it down and lovingly reversed the preflight process. His efforts were not only rewarded by a fantastic accident free first flight, but the admiration from those gathered to witness it. Handshakes and pats on the back were given by nearly every spectator including myself and I was but a teenager at the time.
Modern Remote Control helicopters are much more stable and easier to fly. They come in both gas and electric powered platforms. Both offer distinct advantages and disadvantages, but the one thing they have in common is FUN!
